LeafVenge - 2024

For my graduation I had to come up with a project made by myself. Intrigued by abandoned cities I decided to turn my project towards this direction. After working on the story the theme shifted a bit. It developed into a story about respect for nature from humans. Shown in a light-hearthed way. It was a challenge to make a story with nature as character because this is something I had never done before. 

The story is about a leaf who gets cut from a tree. As it falls into a sewer it comes to the idea to take revenge on the city which has taken over the nature. But in order to reach this goal it has to learn by trail and error to collaborate with other leafs. 

In the animated shortfilm I wanted to showcase a variety of my skills, with an emphasis on the environment. I decided to make all the assets & materials from scratch to make an artstyle in which all elements fit together. With a rough city and sewer but clean and vibrant looking nature for extra contrast. 

Textures and materials are made with Blender and Substance Designer. To maintain the same style of textures throughout the scene I decided to make the textures procedural. This also made the proces to texture the buildings faster because I could make quick changes to the colour and roughness of the material. After I made a base layer of the materials of the buildings I manually painted over some rough edges and other highlights or details. It made the proces of texturing the city faster while keeping the same style. 

Here you can see some of the tests I did to get a better feeling animating the character.
